The Best VFX School? The ‘A’ list of VFX schools!

I've been looking for the answer myself for the last 3-4 years and after doing a lot of research(internet and otherwise), I am finally now a student of Seneca College(Toronto, Canada), but I had my own reasons and restrictions and the case might be completely different for you(so read ahead before making any decisions).
Here’s a list of schools that I considered, and the positives and negatives that I weighed before shortlisting Seneca -
1. Gnomon School of Visual Effects, California (USA) - http://www.gnomonschool.com/
Well, I like calling it ‘Kind-of-a-Big-Deal’ School! One, It’s hard to get in! and Two, It’s probably the most expensive out there. I spoke to 2 of their alumni and they spoke very highly of it, not just that, their showreel speaks for itself -

Positives – High Profile, Great Reviews, Proximity to Hollywood.
Negatives – Really Expensive

2. Academy of Art University, California (USA)

The only school(now, SCAD does too) I know of which offers a master’s degree(MFA) in visual effects. This was a sure-fire choice for me, it’s not that difficult to get in and its not that expensive either. The only reason I didn't go for it is because they don’t recognise 3-year degrees(most US universities don’t) and hence were offering me to enrol in their undergrad program(which I wasn't interested in). Every year they have a huge showcase of their student’s work and a lot of students are hired by renowned employers on this occasion.

Positives – Master’s degree in VFX, yearly student showcase attended by BIG studios.
Negatives – Doesn’t recognise 3-year degrees

3. Savannah College of Art & Design(SCAD), Atlanta&Savannah (USA)

SCAD, has very recently started offering Master’s in VFX as  well(In fact, i wasn’t aware of this before writing this article). I didn’t even try applying as it was really expensive!
Positives – Master’s degree in VFX, An established brand name.
Negatives – Doesn’t recognise 3-year degrees, difficult to get in.

4. Sheridan Institute of Technology, Oakville, Canada  -http://cfprod.sheridaninstitute.ca/program_micro/pcanm/

Now, Sheridan is known as one of the best animation schools in the world! but, according to my research, their VFX programs are not as good! Frankly, since I was keen on doing VFX from Canada, I was confused between Sheridan and Seneca(my final shortlist) but then a few reviews from alumni of both the school made me decide on Seneca. The review from the Sheridan grad was great as well but I couldn't find many showreels of this the graduates of this program online(as opposed to Seneca). Also, it is slightly more expensive than Seneca. Both of these colleges offer an 8-month PG diploma in VFX, which, depending on your situation might be good or bad!
Positives – An established brand name, not that expensive
Negatives – not many student showreels online(I could only find one)

5. Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology, Toronto, Canada - http://www.senecavfx.com/

I got to talk with a lot of Seneca-VFX graduates and all of them said nice things about the program and professors. After one semester, I am glad I made the right choice. The professors are really amazing and are all working in the Industry so they keep us updated about the latest tools&techniques. Here’s their latest Students Showcase -
Positives – Not that expensive, a lot of student showreels online.
Negatives – Not as easy to get in.

5. Vancouver Film School(VFS), Vancouver, Canada - http://www.vfs.com/

Hands down, the best VFX school. EVER! But, its so expensive that you might think twice before even thinking!Laughing out loud That being said, there are a lot of student showreels online to watch and all of them are phenomenal. Also voted as the ‘Best 1-year 3d Animation and VFX program in the world’ by 3D World Magazine.
Positives – A HUGE brand name, a lot of student show reels online, recommended by almost everyone.
Negatives – EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE(international students)

6. Bournemouth University, Dorset, UK - http://ncca.bournemouth.ac.uk/courses/?sub=41

Bournemouth is a pretty famous university but there master’s program in visual effects is completely based on programming and technical troubleshooting rather than making(or breaking) stuff.
Positives – One year Master’s degree
Negatives –  technical course, requires a technical background

7. Escape Studios, London, UK

Escape studios is known for offering short-term intensive courses in visual effects, in specific VFX fields(compositing, etc.)
Positives – Short-Term courses, In-house Studio
Negatives – Really Expensive

Final Thoughts – Being an international student I was more bent towards Canadian Schools than US or UK schools because of the easier immigration laws and usually cheaper tuition fees. You get to work for 3 years after a 2 year program in Canada which might not be the case if you study in UK or the US.  Getting a job in the field of visual effects totally depends on your portfolio, so as long as you are dedicated towards a great looking portfolio you WILL get a job no matter which school you are from(or even home or internet-schooled).That being said, I chose Seneca for its in Canada(easy immigration laws), its not-that-expensive and the great alumni feedback.

  2. Hi!
Up until reading this article, i was convinced to join "vanarts" in vancouver for their one year vfx program! please tell me if you did look into it and what you think of it?!
    thanks!

    1. Hi.
Honestly, I dont have any idea about vanarts and don;t know anyone who took the VFX program at Vanarts. I can only recommend Seneca though. If you are not restricting yourself to Canada, Gnomon is a great option. Also, if you DO have a 4-year bachelors, Id advise considering a maste's program at AAU or Emily Carr.

      Delete
    2. I can consider AAU or even Seneca looks good! But is there a good placement rate at any of those? also, is there any prerequisite to joining the seneca vfx program or even a beginner can join?!

      thanks!

    3. What abt Lost Boyz?? Is it worthy??

      Delete
  3. Placement rate? If you're thinking these colleges provide placement, you're wrong. Nobody provides campus placements here. You have to look for a job yourself. At the end of the day if your reel is good you will get a job. You are expected to have a good basic foundation of visual effects and are required to submit a portfolio of your work based on which you application will be reviewed.

  6. This list is not accurate if Lost Boys Studios - School of Visual Effects is not on it! They are a dedicated VFX School and have the highest placement rate 100% for the last 3 classes! Check them out if you are serious about VFX! www.lostboys-studios.com/ or find them of Facebook http://www.facebook.com/SchoolOfVFX?ref=hl

    1. Hey Yogesh..Lost Boys, according to what I have heard is a good school for VFX..but unfortunately I havent met anyone from Lostboys working in the industry, yet. Their demo reels are really impressive as well. I would definitely recommend it over VFX(overpriced) but I dont know being an international student would you get work permit from this program or not. That's why I usually recommend Govt. funded Institutions like Seneca or Sheridan etc.

Sorry for the late reply and for confusing you. Rushabh, all the schools are good at the end of the day its you reel that gets you the job. You can even learn from home from websites like Digital Tutors or FXPHD and make a kickass reel. At the end of the day its the same content that is taught in the school or on these tutorial websites.

    1. Both the colleges require you to submit a portfolio based on which you are selected for the program. There are a lot of resources available online(Digital Tutors, Lynda.com, FXPHD) etc. I suggest you study some tutorials and get a hang of the softwares.

      Delete
    2. if you want to learn abit about VFX start with After effects master that and then go into 3d visual FX. Youtube channels like Corridor digital, and Rocket Jump have alternative channels linked to them that are just VFX tutorials. If you want to learn programs like 3ds max, rayfire, fumefx, and boujou then look up some tutorials. If you want to learn any specific effect then look it up on youtube and some one will have a tutorial on it. You will need a pretty beefy editing PC however so just a warning. I you want to learn how to make an editing PC then again youtube has tutorials.

Firstly would like to say hats off to you to help people wishing to enter VFX with such a good blog.
I have 15 years of experience in 3D animation with good knowledge of VFX. I wish to start a school of VFX in India with a accreditation or partnership with some good university maybe Seneca, AAU, Lost Boys etc. Is this possible, and can you help me discuss this with someone you know in Seneca.

    Cheers!

Wow, Great to hear that. In my opinion the Indian market lacks a 'genuine' VFX school. Which city are you planning to open the school in? Why don't mail me with your email address and we can discuss this in detail. I sure am in touch with the H.O.D at Seneca whom you can get in touch with and take this forward.
      Happy to Help.

There are very limited scholarships for international scholarships you should refer the website of the institute and better yet, call them.

  45. Hellooo, effective next school year (2014-2015) I will be a senior in high school and I decided I would go ahead and find out exactly what college I plan to attend. I have a passion for videogames and editing (particularly particle editing) so I decided I want a degree in VFX. I have a couple questions that I hope whoever reads this can answer. I want to go to college in California but I live in Mississippi so I suspect I will be living in a dormitory. I read your captions for Gnomon and AAU and you said that Gnomon was probably the most expensive? I'm not sure if my research is flawed or not but from what I have seen as far as tuition+books+room/board, both Gnomon and AAU are into the 20s if not 30s of thousands so how do you figure Gnomon is the most expensive? I don't want to have typed up an essay of questions and not have anyone respond to them so whoever reads this, if you think you can help me, email me at chancedupree3@gmail.com (alternate: leturkeybacon@gmail.com)

    1. Hello
I am also Like u. I have just passed Computer Science & Engineering.
Following things Will be most Helpful for u.
      1. In masters As an admission requirement you need Portfolio. Portfolio means some work done by you like short video, Digital Sketches, Images, etc.
      2. U have 1 year left so if you can learn by own so start learning Photoshop, After Effects, 3DSMAX, MAYA, etc. This thing will help you to make portfolio.
      3. If you don't learn by own you can take short term courses like 6 months 3 months. Clarify them at the end of my course I have a super Portfolio which is done by me.
      4. If you want to go out of India for this type of course u don't need GRE but you need to give any singel test TOEFL or IELTS, etc.
      5. Excepting Masters some Certification courses are there some of them also need Portfolio.
If you have good Portfolio after completing BE/BTECH you can do anything EVEN JOB ALSO.
      All The Best.
